Royal (or State) Farthings of James I, Charles I, and the Commonwealth

Charles I (27 March 1625 - 30 January 1649)
Rose Double Type

(See also Farthings of James I, Charles I, and the Commonwealth)

The Double Rose types have double-arched crowns on the obverse and a double-rose on the reverse. There are four main types which are differentiated mainly by the position of the scepters. In the first type, the scepters are entirely within the inner circle. In the second type, the bases or handles of the scepters extend about halfway between the inner circle and the edge of the coin. The third type has the handles of the scepters extending almost to the edge of the coin. The fourth type is similar to the third type in that the handles of the scepters extend to the edge of the coin, but differs in the reading of the legend which ends BRI rather than the BRIT that is found on the first three types.
