Maltravers Round Type

The Maltravers Round farthings are broken into three very similar types. They differ mainly in the mint or privy mark arrangement.
  • First type: Mark on obverse only
  • Second type: Same mark on obverse and reverse
  • Third type: Different mark on obverse than that on reverse

Maltravers Round Currency (Copper): (1634-1636)
Spink 3189; Peck 230-233; Montagu 3
O  Crown with double arch and with 5 oval jewels on the circlet; crossed scepters through the crown, beaded inner circle. Privy mark at top center at start of legend, mark on obverse only
CAROLVS : D : G : MAG : BRIT (top dot of colon is a dot or an apostrophe)
R  Harp with 5 or 6 strings and an eagle's head, broad crown above with double arch and with 5 oval jewels on the circlet, beaded inner circle
· FRAN · ET : HIB : REX · (or [FRAN : ET : HIB : REX] with the top dot of the colon being an apostrophe)

R  Harp with 5, 6, 7, or 8 strings and an eagle's head, broad crown above with double arch and with 5 oval jewels on the circlet, beaded inner circle. Privy mark at end of legend, mark same as obverse mark
FRAN ET HIB REX (with various stops)
Same privy mark on obverse and reverse
