Royal (or State) Farthings of James I, Charles I, and the Commonwealth

James I (24 March 1603 - 27 March 1625)

The farthings of James I fall into two main categories, the Harington and the Lennox types. Additionally there is one pattern that was struck. The Lennox is divided into the round and oval (for Ireland) types. All in all, the farthings are divided into a total eight types and the subdivisions used by Peck and Spink will be followed here. These are:

Harington Currency (Copper): (1613-1614)
Spink 2674-2676; Peck 28-54; Montagu 2
O  Crown with 5 jewels on the circlet, crossed scepters through the crown. Scepter-heads extend into the legend and IACO is fully between the heads
IACO D G MAG BRIT
R  Harp with knob ornaments and 7 or 8 strings, crown above with 5 or 9 jewels on the circlet
FRA ET HIB REX
IACO fully between scepter heads

O  Crown with 5 or 9 jewels on the circlet, crossed scepters through the crown. Scepter-heads extend to the base of the legend and IACO starts near top center or near the right scepter head
IACO D G MAG BRI (or [BRIT] or [BRITA])
R  Harp with eagle's head or, in a few cases, plain, and 5, 6, or 7 strings, crown above with 5 or 9 jewels on the circlet
FRA ET HIB REX
IACO starts at top center, near the right scepter-head

O  Crown with 5 jewels on the circlet, crossed scepters through the crown. Scepter-handles extend through the legend and legend starts at lower left by left scepter-handle

R  Harp with eagle's head and 6, or 7 strings, crown above with 5 jewels on the circlet
FRA ET HIB REX
Legend on obverse and reverse starts at lower left, near left scepter-handle

O  Crown above initials I R. To the left an expanded rose with a pellet above and below, to the right a thistle with a pellet above and below. Below the initals is a small rose between two pellets.
