Royal (or State) Farthings of James I, Charles I, and the Commonwealth

Charles I (27 March 1625 - 30 January 1649)

The farthings of Charles I fall into three main types that were current plus a set of patterns. These types consist of the Richmond, the Maltravers, and the Rose farthings. Additionally, there is a transition type between the Richmond and Maltravers, and the normal round Richmond and Maltravers pieces are supplemented by oval counterparts that were struck originally for use in Ireland.

The Rose farthings are broken into two types as well, the first having the scepters through or behind the crown and the second having them fully beneath the crown. The Rose farthings with the scepter through the crown consist of a type which has double-arched crowns on the obverse and reverse and the rose on the reverse is a double rose. The second type has single-arched crowns and a single rose. Of course, there are transitional pieces which have combinations of the two obverses and reverses.
